Our Embassy in Dublin
The British Embassy is situated on the Merrion Road approximately 2 kilometres from the city centre.
The design was chosen as the result of an architectural competition.
The Embassy was opened by HRH The Princess Royal on 19 January 1996 and it won an RIBA Award in 1997.
There are 2 separate entrances. The main entrance is frontal, positioned centrally in the symmetrical 5-bay section of the elevation and marked by a chimneystack and blank timber panel containing the coat of arms. The entrance to the consular section is in the asymmetrical 3-bay extension of the facade and is reached via a stone bridge over a pebbled garden.
The internal organisation of the Embassy is through its tripartite division into base, piano nobile and attic. Small openings at ground level contrast with the large highly articulated windows of the principal floor above.
The attic is defined by a continuous clerestory window, which makes the roof appear to float free of the walls below.
